The Powerhouse of the Cell

MITOCHONDRIA, THE POWERHOUSE THAT POWERS YOU!

VOTE MITOCHONDRIA FOR THE BEST ORGANELLE IN THE CELL!

Did You Know?

The Mitochondria is the organelle that keeps the whole cell running. Without it, no cells would have the energy to survive and carry out regular life processes. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, and without it, you wouldn't be reading this right now.

Still Don't Believe Us?

The mitochondria is so great, that it is believed that it once existed on it's own.

Why is Mitochondria the Most Important Organelle?

The mitochondria digests nutrients to create energy called ATP or Adenosine (a-den-o-seen) Triphosphate. This energy is the current used to power all living things. Without the ATP, none of the other organelles would be able to do any of their jobs.

What are the benefits of the Mitochondria?

  • They can quickly change shape and move around the cell when needed
  • When the cell needs more energy the mitochondria can grow and divide on it's own. When the cell needs less energy, they can become inactive
  • Some of them can produce hundreds of different proteins used for various functions

  2. Mitochondria, you have informed us all that you are the most important organelle since you once were believed to live on your own. But did you know that in order for you to survive on your own you needed some sort of protective membrane? Thanks to me, the cell membrane, and my design and known structure you were able to survive and are still able to survive to this very day! So who really is the most important organelle? An organelle that used another organelle's structure to survive or the organelle who provided the known structure? I would choose the latter. May the best organelle win!

    1. Oh cell membrane, I will have you know that the mitochondria has it's own double membrane, meaning your point is invalid. And may I remind you that you, the cell membrane, allowed in the mitochondria, meaning that it felt that this would benefit the cell, and let me just say, I think it has. But you are right about one thing, may the best organelle win!

  3. Do you know many scientists refer to you guys as tiny little slaves? This is because when prokaryote cells ate the mitochondria, some of them happened to spare your life inside instead of destroying you. Why would they do such a thing, since you guys are considered practically worthless you ask? This is because you guys could work to digest food, and provide energy for them instead of doing it themselves, big whoop! Eventually many of you guys started living in eukaryotes because you lost your ability to live on your own! I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t go for a organelle that acts as a slave to stronger and bigger cells, let alone being weak enough to the point where it can’t live on its own. I’d vote for the one who provides protection, and keeps the cell alive- I wonder what kind of marvelous organelle does that…

    1. Slave you say? I think you mean Powerhouse. Your point only proves that the mitochondria does an immense amount of work for the cell, meaning that it is not weak, but in fact very strong. The mitochondria produces the very energy that you use to protect the cell, so take a moment and ask yourself, where would you be without ATP? Not in this election. But don't feel bad, no one else would be either.

  4. The mitochondria is even limited as to what it can digest! You need us, the peroxisomes, to break down long fatty acid chains into smaller ones for you. On top of that, we take care of the alcohol and amino acids. Not to mention it is the peroxisomes who are mainly responsible for the production of metabolic energy in plants, not you.

  5. It's great and all that you produce energy, you amazing powerhouse! But you know what doesn't use energy? Dead things, and thats exactly what you would be without the golgi processing materials inside the cell.

  6. Another point to add, without the Golgi the mitochondria would not be able to live on its own. They could not use the energy because it hasn't been processed properly by the golgi. The golgi needs to separate the materials good and bad to be transferred into the rest of the cell. If not, the materials would not be separated and this would cause death of the cell.

  7. Did you know that the mitochondria is not the only powerhouse or energy provider of the cell? The lysosome decomposes oils and starch to release energy that the cell can use to energize the construction of new molecules. We have many functions... Including the protection of the cell from viruses that would destroy the mitochondria. Vote Lysosome, we can get the job done even when other organelles fail.
